Welcome to the Liverpool School Sport Partnership (LSSP) website where we hope to not only celebrate the successes of pupils and schools in the four Liverpool Partnerships but also share with you the latest information around the agenda for PE and Sport.
The four LSSPs include every state funded primary, secondary and special school in Liverpool and work strategically to achieve the national “PE & Sport Strategy for Young People” (PESSYP) strategy launched in 2008 for 5-16 year olds to participate in the ‘5 hour’ offer. This includes 5-16 year olds taking part in at least 2 hours of high quality curriculum PE and sport at school each week; and create new opportunities for them to participate in a further 3 hours each week of sporting activity, through school, voluntary and community providers; and create new opportunities for all 16-19 years olds to participate in 3 hours each week of sporting activities through their colleges or in local clubs.
The LSSPs are centred around Sports College or other key hub schools and receive funding from the Department of Children, Families and Schools, guaranteed until August 2011. This provides funding towards infrastructure staff which includes Partnership Development Managers, release of School Sport Coordinators from secondary PE departments for 2 days a week, a Further Education Sport Coordinator and support for Primary Link Teachers for 10 days a year as well as 2 City Competition Managers.
To achieve the PE & Sport Strategy for Young People, each LSSP also accesses funding to employ additional staff including a team of KS1/2 & KS4 and special needs Coaches as well as specialist staff Gymnastics and Dance teachers
Key areas of work for the LSSPs include;
1. Provision of High Quality PE for all students currently being achieved through Dance &/or Gym & Swimming programmes –CPD programme, examples of best practice, links to Sports Colleges
2. Provision of opportunities for all young people to participate in a range of high quality activities on a school site – include Active Playtimes including Yr5/6 leaders delivering activities, Wake up & Shake up activities before school & after lunch, different activities being introduced into secondary schools including body combat, yoga, boxercise, handball plus Coaching programme which offer new sports often with competitive opportunities
3. Opportunities for all young people to access a range of high quality activities in a community environment; supporting key clubs, sports fayres, funding for school to club links, new holiday & community activities being supported by LSSP Coaches who are known by the pupils
4. Provision for all young people to develop their potential; intra school, inter school including new competitions; badminton, table tennis, gymnastics, cheerleading, handball, multi skills etc.
5. Provision for young people to undertake high quality Leadership and Volunteering roles; development of young leaders through training & support (NGB awards), developing & supporting young volunteers in opportunities in their own school, primary schools, community clubs and holiday programmes, Sports Ambassadors in each secondary school
Three success measures for the PESSYP strategy have now been agreed by the Government.
These are :-
1. Ensuring that there is a ‘5 hour offer’
2. Ambitious expectations for take up of the offer amongst 5-19year olds
a. By 2010/11 40% take part in 5 hours PE & sport per week*
b. By 2012/13 60% take part in 5 hours PE & sport per week
3. Ensure that the offer is accessible and attractive to all;
By 2010/11, 80% of 5-16 year olds will be taking part in 3 hours of PE & sport organised by schools. This is a floor target for all schools
* all references to the 5 hour offer should be taken to include 3 hours per week for 16-19 year olds
